Current Inspiration?

Postby Spenny on Mon Dec 03, 2007 1:32 am

What's your current inspiration?

At the moment, mine are:
Alfons Mucha (although he's a mainstay for inspiration)
Robert Henri and his Art Spirit Book
Leinil Yu (also a mainstay)
Robert Louis Stevenson

Feel free to post images and opinions, if you have 'em (I definitely hope you have the latter), I just didn't have any suitable or quality images to share!

oh man, Alfons Mucha = epic win.
And that's fact, not opinion :U

My inspiration currently includes
Kea who's been my ultimate favorite artist for a good number of years now. I don't know why. I'm not normally so fond of photography enough to swoon over it and draw any real inspiration--but something about Kea's work just does it for me.

Gezfry

Naomi Chen god facking 16-17 year old girl who's talent has been responsible for making full grown men cry.

Gunnmgally

Alex Stodolnik

Marc Brunet

James Jean

Ashley Wood Though, I'm not so much a fan of his sketches, more just his paintings <3

I think that's it from me for now :]

Yes yes, Mucha. I can add him to my list, too. Here is the rest of the list, that is mostly the recurrent inspirations:

Matt Rhodes, who sadly doesn't have an online gallery anymore.
Ivan Bilibin
Sherlock Holmes, and anything generally Victorian.
Claire Hummel
Edmund Dulac
Arthur Rackham
Fashion, especially oooooold fashion.

That's all I can think of for now :)

Sure, Matt does! His and his brother's old one just went down.

Matt went to ACAD with the lot of us, and his brother Tom is about to rejoin my year after taking a long leave of absence. Matt works at Bioware now and we've gone to visit my ex Joy a few times and hung out with him as well. Not trying to do the "I know so and so" thing, just saying. :P

Also, gunnmgally is amazing, and I love to gawk at their work constantly.

I just grabbed the new Process Recess 2 that JJ put out. I ordered some of his originals for Joy last year just before we broke up, too. :?

I watch them other folk as well.
Been looking at a lot of Sam Weber again lately. Enjoying the ink techniques.

That photo link is great! *explores*
And when I need something photography related...

That guy, Andru Chrisst, has a very twisted but often amazing sense for fetish fashion. Some of his more normal looking dresses are phenomenal.

MC Escher
Katsuhiro Otomo. I have the comic books, and am disappointed to find that some of the greatest detail work isn't online.
Brute (aka Aidan Hughes) does some amazing propaganda/40s pulp style stuff in there. Amazing art, but watch out: some of his comic stuff is NWS.
Javas
Kuewa

Ohgod, those are some amazing artists you guys posted. :D

Thank you so much Spenny for the link to Matt's gallery! :D I knew he works at Bioware now, but I didn't know he went to ACAD. Or that you knew him personally. And Joy Ang. To quote Mr Neo: "Whoa". XD

OH Rhodes!
I knew that name sounded familiar : D My boyfriend is good chums with him. They were going to work together when Sean was offered a job as art director for Bioware before it was bought out by EA--to work on the Sonic Hedgehog game for the DS. Unfortunately, it was bad timing and Sean had other commitments with his current job.

I've never actually got to see his art until now though. The guy definitely has some pretty badass work. Though I'm not certain I'd be able to pick his style out of a crowd. But it may just be because I'm not too familiar with his work at this point ' 3'!
Haha awesome!
Small world. But I guess that's what happens when you have an art group as small as the one in calgary ;]

hehe, indeed!

Also, I agree about Claire Wendling! I'm on a huge CW kick and just ordered two more of her books that I hope get here soon.

Also, Christian Ward is an illustrator I found around September-ish and I love his style. http://www.cwardillustration.com

Chris Appelhans, the director of Monster House, and occasional Flight contributor, of course. I listen to his music quite a bit, actually. http://www.froghatstudios.com/

And my personal favorites of the moment whom actually take a spot right on my bookmarks toolbar... The Hanuka brothers. http://tropicaltoxic.blogspot.com/

My constant inspiration is always the Sons of the Storm: http://www.sonsofthestorm.com - which is so ingrained into how I draw since I pretty much started way back when by redrawing Blizzard manual art lol

Current inspirations though?
Most of mine have been listed, James Jean and the like! Joy Ang recently, in fact most of C-Block 2nd year does, ever since we realized she's an ACAD grad lol! And GunnerRomantic of course. If I ever do more real media I definitely would like to learn off of her techniques.

It just hit me like a brick yesterday, but Bill Watterson is as awesome as it gets. His work with colored inks is amazing, and his inked linearts too. The Calvin & Hobbes comic is also very well written.

A Bill Watterson wallpaper that I've had lying around on my computer for a long time: http://www.mudpuppy.otersi.com/1185370108962.jpg
Great artist, seemed like a nice guy and really stuck to his guns in terms of keeping the integrity of his comic. It's too bad he's apparently a little nutty these days. I guess having a syndicated comic might do that, though.

Chris Sanders is made of win, the fact that he also made the voice acting for Stitch adds many many points to his score XD

Nitpicking, I know, but it's Iain McCaig, with the additional "i". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iain_McCaig

Do you have any links for Daryl Mandryk, James Hawkins and Jenny Seville?

I am in art school, spelling has become a negligible practice.

Jenny Saville you will just have to google. She is way to classy to have her own site, but there are plenty of resources out there for you.

When I was doing my AS Graphics, a lot of my inspiration came from Lazlo Maholy-Nagy and Man Ray. There was these huge prints in one of the graphics rooms with interesting experiments using light and photographic paper. It really influenced a lot of my later work for the project. Both had great thoughts in terms of composition and experimenting in the dark room!

Also Magritte's leaf-birds really got me into the artist himself. I thought they were just great! And some of his works are very strange. I think it's his way of expressing himself just inspired me.

Man, I miss art class...

I think this is my favorite thread right now... everyone keeps posting awesome links.

Here's a couple more:

This is the amazing person, Enrique Fernandez, that did the Wizard of Oz graphic novel everyone's been gawking at since last year: http://enriquefernandez0.blogspot.com/

Michael Hussar, a creepy but amazing oil painter (Karyl, you and I saw him at the CA workshop, you might recognize some of his stuff): http://www.michaelhussar.com

Daryl Mandryk, an amazing concept artist, and I love his speedpainties:
http://www.mandrykart.com/

The under constructed, out-dated website of Sparth, whom is very awesome: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/arth/home.htm

http://illustrationart.blogspot.com
-this guy looks at old illustrators and artists that were successful and critiques their pieces, identifying why they were or were not working. Great stuff.

And James Gurney (creator of Dinotopia):
