Here’s some quick conceptual work, expanding the entire overlapping world of my first Popgun short comic, Breath.

This was actually my first attempt at doing anything entirely digital.  A pretty quick job on both of these, but they turned out pretty good for what they’re worth.  As always, click the images for larger views.

I’ve started a Twitter account which you’re more than welcome to check out and follow. I’ve been updating it with everything from the most meaningless of drivel to the status on upcoming projects.  Thank you to all of the people who have already started following me!  So far its been a lot easier than blogging because I don’t always have a lot to say or show.

As for artwork, I’m working on a few things right now that I can’t show yet but soon!  I’m working on a new Popgun short comic, some stuff for Black Sheep Studios, some good friends of mine, and also trying to graduate as well!  If anyone knows of any job openings, graduation is coming fast.  I’ll have some more work to share with you all soon.

As for the Links section of this website, you may notice a lot of new additions.  Black Sheep Studios, the illustration studio I mentioned in my previous paragraph, my good friend/current roommate Scott Carmichael, and a lot of other people are all scattered about.  I’d recommend checking them all out.

Now, it pleases me that I finally have 2 minutes to actually write about something.  I’ve gotten a lot of new readers in the past little while (you should comment more, even if you hate me!) and I don’t think its very evident that I don’t just like to make art but I also love to write.  So, what I’d like to share with you is my thoughts on the new Watchmen movie.  It relates to art, its fantasy, its relevant.  I thought it was great.  It took a while to arrive at that conclusion though.

When the Watchmen first started and the scene where the news casters comes on, I was intensely worried about the movie.  All of the actors were over acting, everything seemed incredibly staged, and President Nixon’s make up was absolutely horrid.  In fact, I think Nixon was the worst part of the movie, now that I look back.  However, once the movie got going it completely captivated me and redeemed itself from the opening.  The fight scenes were very well choreographed (something you didn’t get a sense of in the comic book), the super suits were all hilarious and gimicky, and I was surprised how close they stuck to the book for most of the entire movie, including the dialogue.

You really shouldn’t read this if you don’t like spoilers, but this is where I get to what I didn’t like about the movie, aside from Nixon’s make up.  The biggest thing I dislike about the movie is its representation.  I’m not sure what was delivered wrong about this movie, but the critics are all morons.  It sounds to me like they were expecting the same sort of cheesey superhero, over the top, action packed, crap.  Instead they got something that showed the occasional penis, and… a plot.  Scary things, I know, but humanity will prevail in these dark times.

The second thing I had a problem with was the new ending.  I liked it, actually, I just had a problem with its sloppy execution in relation to the rest of the movie.  The pacing seemed to get wonky as soon as the writing changed and everything felt rushed.  The exclusion of the giant squid seemed to make sense to me, but if they weren’t going to mention the gene splicing then why include the mutant tiger?  There was no mention of Ozy’s experiments with mutants and gene splicing, yet he magically had this badly CG’ed tiger without any explanation.  In fact, its not just the swapping of the ending that made the tiger make no sense at all, its that there was no explanation for it in a movie where they try to give you as much background and explanation as possible.  They also left out the original Night Owl’s death, which was odd.  So, not all bad there, but it could have been refined.

So, that’s all you’re going to get from me.  If you were scared of all the weiner the nude blue dude shows, or the controversial material the movie touches on, I urge you to wake up and grow up.  If you’re of the bunch complaining about the gratuitous sex scene, well… that was a gift from the director and the MPAA to you, and we all know how rude it is to complain when someone gives you a present.

    1. I had no idea what I was getting into when I went to see the Watchmen. So the blue dong was an entertaining surprise!

I thought it was a very good movie, though I am not sure i enjoyed it a super lot. Not really my sort of movie to be honest, but I could feel that I really respected the materail– even if I had never read it.

Also I like that cave thing, Spenny!

    2. Thanks Rache’! Yeah, I don’t expect everyone to like the movie. I think more I was disappointed with a lot of the complaints people had for it. Complaining about things like a blue penis just seems so juvenile and insecure.

    3. My thoughts on the watchmen are best summed up by Marvel Comics Editor in Chief Joe Quesada here : http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.7240.MyCup_o~apos~_Joe_Week_46

2 hours wasn’t enough and aside from Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Jackie Earle Haley, the acting was completely unbelievable and pulled me right out of the movie. I love Watchmen by Alan Moore with a passion that burns white hot, and I have to agree with his own statement that Watchmen was never meant to be a movie.

Read the article though, Mr. Quesada really says it right.
